- Be an active member of the Engineering Leadership Team taking a lead role in driving performance, encouraging best practice and success.
- To work towards delivery of the Engineering 5-year strategy supporting the business vision.
- Own the Site Services strategy and roadmap for utilities, buildings, and critical services; align with production, food safety, quality, and business continuity needs.
- Lead and develop a small internal maintenance/utilities team (skills matrix, training plans, task competency, succession, and performance management).
- Always demonstrate safe behaviour and conform to all safe systems of work
- Manage contractors and service providers—pre-qualification, competency checks, RAMS review, permits-to-work, site inductions, supervision, and performance against SLAs.
- Own the permit-to-work and LOTO systems across all high-risk activities (hot work, confined space, work at height, electrical isolation, pressure systems, etc.).
- Plan and deliver CAPEX and OPEX for utilities, fabric, and infrastructure—business cases, ROI/NPV, tendering, and contractor selection.
- Set and track KPIs (MTBF, MTTR, PM compliance, statutory compliance, energy/water intensity, cost-to-serve, contractor performance).
- To be a confident communicator at all levels
- To be flexible for occasional out-of-hour advice and support
- Lead a culture that enhances awareness to reduce accidents and near misses
- Ensure legal compliance with relevant UK H&S law, including:
HSWA, MHSWR, PUWER, LOLER, PSSR (pressure systems), DSEAR/ATEX (flammables/explosives), COSHH, RIDDOR, CDM (projects), Working at height, Electricity at Work Regs, Manual Handling, etc.
- Steam generation & distribution: operate boilers safely and efficiently; water treatment, blowdown optimisation, condensate return, trap surveys, insulation integrity.
- Steam boilers & pressure systems: maintain a Written Scheme of Examination, coordinate competent person statutory inspections, remedial actions, and records (PSSR).
- Compressed air systems: leakage detection/repair programme, dew point control, filtration at points of use, heat recovery opportunities, and energy optimisation.
- Legionella control: manage L8/HTM/Guidance compliance for water systems—risk assessment, sampling, flushing, temperature controls, and remedials.
- Refrigeration: maintaining plant for temperature/humidity control and product integrity,
ensure F-Gas compliance, leak checks, records; assess DSEAR zoning; emergency planning and ammonia response.
- Electrical infrastructure: coordinate with site electrical duty holders on HV/LV maintenance, UPS/backup generation, and power quality
- Maintain LOLER register of lifting equipment and liaise with competent persons for statutory inspections.
- Contractor control: robust RAMS, method statements, & supervision.
- Emergency preparedness: utilities failures, fire, steam/pressure excursions, power loss.
- Energy & carbon management: track and improve energy usage (kWh/tonne), water consumption, steam efficiency; support sustainability objectives and reduction plans.
- Pollution prevention: control of emissions, noise, effluent; oil/fuel management; oversee routine inspections and corrective actions.
- Carry out duties ensuring the site achieves and maintains required GMP standards
- Take the lead in compliance audits & create corrective action plans for non-compliance with ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and FSSC 22000—maintain procedures, risk controls, records, and evidence for internal/external audits.
- To communicate with teams and ensure problems are escalated accordingly
- Work management: triage, plan, schedule, and close work orders; prioritise by risk/impact; ensure failure codes and quality of feedback.
- Planned Maintenance (PM): build risk-based PM routines for boilers, compressors, dryers/filters, refrigeration packs, chillers, AHUs, air handlers, and building fabric.
- Identify own training needs and with Site Manager & agree a time plan for achieving this.
- Contribute to and help implement continuous improvement, to enhance quality, safety, efficiency, and waste reduction.
- To be systems minded and have a good operational understanding of the process & awareness of production waste/defects
